I Built an AI That Picks Gifts Better Than I Do
Hi HN!
Gift-giving is hard, so I built Giftron.app to help. It’s an AI-powered gift finder that personalizes recommendations based on recipient, age, interests, and the occasion.
Under the hood, it uses GPT to generate gift ideas then search for products. Right now, it’s integrated with Amazon, but I’m exploring adding more platforms and refining the personalization to assist better.
I started this as a fun side project after struggling to find thoughtful gifts myself. It’s helped my friends to get perfect ideas, but I’d love feedback from the HN community:
Does it solve a problem you care about? Any ideas for features or improvements?
Thanks
I typed in “violin” as an interest and it suggested getting a “personalized violin pick” as a gift
Unfortunately thats not a thing, you don’t use a pick to play violin
Classic AI
(The actual links were to guitar picks)
Thank you for your feedback I will look into it.
What this needs to do... is tie in with the gift receiver's amazon wish lists. And do alternative/related gifts...
Currently, it generates ideas based on recipient age, interests and occasion then search these ideas on amazon and suggest some products based on these ideas.
You might want to repost this prefixed with "Show HN:" so it gets posted to the part of the site where people like to see new projects.
Thank you so much. I will do it.
It just came up with generic ideas. Can I instruct it to suggest gifts that are a little more... out-there?
I have plan to add an input field so you can input your preferences. Can you please elaborate more about how you would like to instruct it? Your feedback is an appreciation for me to keep working on this project.
Where do the "Popular Gift Lists" at the bottom of the page come from?
It is coming from database, where I have added many lists based on some common interests and recipients so if someone doesn't sure about his/her recipient, they may find a helpful list in explore ideas section.
Yeah suggestions are way too obvious. I put cycling in as an interest and it gave me 4 different helmets to choose from… errr
I think in general that suggesting items for peoples hobbies is usually a bad idea because if someone is passionate about cycling they probably know the exact gear they want, me who knows nothing about this topic can’t choose a good gift.
It’s better to buy gifts you do know something about, eg if I’m really in to kitchen knives I could buy a nice knife for someone because everyone needs a good knife and I can choose a good one.
Thanks for the feedback! You're absolutely right, hobby related gifts can be tricky, especially for enthusiasts who have specific preferences. I'll work on refining the algorithm to focus on more universally appreciated gifts. Open to more ideas on improving the approach!
